Abstract

Germanium tetrachloride is produced by reacting solids consisting principally of germanium dioxide in dry condition with hydrogen chloride gas at 300 DEG -700 DEG C. The germanium dioxide is preferably freshly precipitated. The hydrogen chloride gas may be passed through sulphuric acid solution followed by a calcium chloride tower to ensure complete freedom from moisture.
