Abstract
A sweetening process comprises sweetening a virgin petroleum fraction with air in the presence of a petroleum fraction containing olefin unsaturates. The fraction containing unsaturates is one obtained by thermally or catalytically cracking a petroleum fraction. The virgin fraction may be an extract from solvent extraction of kerosine e.g. with sulphur dioxide, and may be caustic alkali washed. The air sweetening is preferably conducted in the presence of an accelerator, which may be an oxidation inhibitor such as disec. butyl p phenylene diamine, and is carried out either by blowing with air or by standing with exposure to air. The olefinic fraction may consist in whole or in part of a sour fraction which readily air sweetens, or a sour virging naphtha which easily sweetens may be added to the kerosine extract. It is preferred to use betwen 9 and 100 per cent by volume of the olefinic fraction based on the virgin fraction.
