Abstract
Textile materials composed wholly or partly of wool or other animal fibres are impregnated with an aqueous solution or dispersion of a proteinaceous substance and then treated to harden and insolubilize the proteinaceous substance. The latter may be casein, egg albumen, serum albumen, gelatin or the proteinaceous substances obtained from wheat, corn, soya beans and peanuts. The impregnated material may be dried prior to hardening, which may be effected in a bath containing an electroylte, e.g. sodium sulphate with or without sulphuric acid, and a tanning agent, which may be from aldehyde, a dialdehyde, a chromate, tannic acid or quinone. The hardening bath may have a pH within the range 6 to 9 adjusted, e.g. with sodium bicarbonate and a temperature of 30 DEG C., to which it may be raised gradually from room temperature while containing the fabric. The pH of the bath of proteinaceous substance may be adjusted to 7.5 to 8 with sodium hydroxide. The material may be previously treated with ethanol, an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide or chlorine.
