Abstract

[Also in Group XXV] An elastic yarn having an extensibility up to the order of 300 per cent comprises a pretwisted elastic core, e.g. a rubber thread, and a covering of one or more strands, i.e. rovings or yarns, of thermoplastic textile material, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate or acrylonitrile, polyester resins, polyvinylidene chloride, polyamide resins, as continuous filaments or staple fibres which may be blended with fibres such as cotton or viscose filaments or staple which are not set by heat the covering material is wrapped about the core in a direction opposite to the twist thereof and heat set or heat set and shrunk into close engagement with the core to produce a uniform balanced yarn. As shown in Fig. 6, two ends 11 of covering yarns are led from cones 12, through tension devices 13 and over bars 14 to guide eyes 15, and a twisted rubber core 10 is led from a spool 16 frictionally driven by a drum 17 to control the amount and tension of thread 10 supplied to its guide eye 15: the yarn 11 makes several turns about metering rolls 18, 19, which control the rate of feed of the yarn so that when the components 10 and 11, after passing over a bar 20 and through a guide 21, are combined by a traveller 22 on a ring 23, they form a wrapped yarn which is taken up on a bobbm 24. In another method, Fig. 7, utilizing a spinning frame, the rubber core 10 is supplied from the spool 16 to the front pair of drafting rolls 26, and rovings 11 are led from packages 12<SP>1</SP> to the rolls 26: the yarn components, with the tension in the core 10 reduced, are combined by a traveller 28 on the ring 29. The yarn, which at this stage may be unbalanced as represented in Fig. 5 (not shown), is heated as by immersion in hot water or by treatment in a heated oven or chamber supplied with steam.
