Abstract

Finely divided silica having a surface area of 60-200 sq.m./gm and an average ultimate particle size below 0.1 micron, and containing at least 90 per cent of SiO2, one mole of bound water per 3 to 9 moles of SiO2, 2-10 per cent of free water, and one mole of alkaline earth metal oxide per 10-150 moles of SiO2 is prepared by reacting finely divided alkaline earth metal silicate having a particle size of below 0.1 micron and a surface area of 50-125 sq. m./gm. with an acid or acidic material, which forms a water soluble salt of the alkaline earth metal, in an amount sufficient to produce the above alkaline earth metal oxide content. Alkaline earth metals included are those of series 3-8, Group II of the Periodic Table. The pH of the silicate is reduced to below about 4 or 5 by the addition of the acid. The use of calcium silicate and hydrochloric acid is specified. The product may contain 0.5-6 per cent of calcium calculated as CaO. The pH may be adjusted to above 5, preferably in the range 5-7, by the addition of alkali. The alkali is generally added to the precipitated silica before the silica is separated from its mother liquor. The pigment may be dried at 120-140 DEG C. for 10-12 hours. The silica may be formed into cakes by compressing to a bulk density of 15-30 lbs., preferably 20-25 lbs. per cu. ft. under a pressure of 125-200 lbs./sq. in. Specification 745,822 is referred to.
