Abstract
In making highly polymeric polymethylene terephthalates by polymerizing under subatmospheric pressure a bis-(hydroxyalkyl) terephthalate formed by ester interchange between a glycol and an alkyl ester of terephthalic acid, a salt of calcium, strontium or barium which is soluble in the reaction mixture is used as a catalyst for the ester interchange process. Suitable salts are those of weak acids, e.g. the acetate, malonate, adipate, benzoate, phosphite or arsenate. The amount of catalyst used should be such as to give a product containing less than 0.1 per cent of metal. The catalyst is preferably added as a fine powder dispersed, or dissolved in glycol. Other catalysts, e.g. lead oxide or antimony compounds such as antimony oxide, antimony acetate, potassium antimony tartrate or potassium pyroantimonate may also be added. Examples employ ethylene glycol and dimethylterephthalate with antimony trioxide as the polycondensation catalyst and use as ester interchange catalysts: (1) calcium acetate; (2) calcium acetate with titanium dioxide as a delustrant; (3) barium acetate; (4) barium phosphite; (5) barium arsenate; and (6) strontium acetate. According to the Provisional Specification the oxide or hydroxide of the alkaline earth metal may be used as the catalyst.
