Abstract
748,827. Stuffing - box substitutes. MASCHINENEBAU-AKT.-GES. BALCKE. July 6, 1953 [April 24, 1953], No. 18696/53. Class 122(5) A seal between the rotary and stationary parts of machines, such as turbines, centrifugal pumps and compressors, comprises an annular sealing face extending at right angles to the rotational axis and an axially movable sealing ring 20, Fig. 1, which is urged towards the sealing face the ring 20 and a guide 9 having co-operating shoulders which restrict movement of the ring towards the face so that there is no contact between them after running in. Fig. 1 shows a two-stage centrifugal pump in which the ring 20 forms a seal with an annular face on the inlet ring 12, the ring 20 being free to move axially on driven pins 28 connecting it with the impeller 2. The pressure at the outlet of the impeller is communicated through chambers 21, 22 and a gap 24 or bores to an annular space 25 to displace the ring 20 towards the ring 12. Springs 27 or gravity, provide the sealing pressure during starting. The second impeller 3 is sealed in a similar manner against a ring 29 secured to the casing. A guide ring 7 shrunk fast on a spacer bush 4 also supports a sealing ring 31 co-operating with a stationary ring 30, the ring 31 being subjected to spring pressure and the pressure of the fluid being pumped. Shoulders 32 serve to limit the wear. A fourth seal comprises an axially movable sealing ring 42 bearing against a collar 8 on a spacer bush 5 separating the impeller 3 from a balancing disc 6. This sealing ring is connected by pins 28 with a ring 41 in screwthreaded engagement with a ring 40 carried by the casing and is therefore stationary. Modified constructions are described in which bore holes are provided in the shoulder ring 9 to transmit pressure to the annular space 25, the sealing ring is mounted on bolts the heads of which limit its axial movement, and in a turbine the co-operating sealing faces are formed in the manner of a labyrinth seal as shown in Fig. 4, the grooves 79, 80 and 81 permitting a high rate of wear during running-in.
