Abstract

747,568. Electrolytic capacitors. WARREN, S. D., and BURKARD, R. F. May 27, 1953 [May 28, 1952], No. 14808/53. Drawings to Specification. Class 37. An electrolytic capacitor comprises a substantially anhydrous nitrogen free electrolyte comprising a non-hydrionizable liquid solvent preferably a ketone, aldehyde or ether containing at least one oxygen atom per molecule and a solute consisting of a weak organic acid and a basic cationogen. A " non-hydrionizable solvent " is one having no hydroxyl groups and which is an insulator by itself and when mixed with water, and a " cationogen " is a substance yielding positive ions in solution. Acetone, benzophenone, acetophenone and their silicon homologues, butaldehyde, propyl aldehyde and ether anisole are quoted examples of such solvents. Examples of cationogens given are sodium, potassium and lithium hydroxides, and sodium phenolate, cresylate and salicylate. Examples of suitable weak organic acids are phenol, nonyl phenols, ether phenols, para-, ortho-, and meta-cresols, and salicylic acid and their silicon homologues. The electrolyte reduces the fall in capacity and increasing power loss with age by preventing hydration of the oxide dielectric layer, and also allows formation of dielectric films on magnesium, zinc and copper as alternatives to the usual tantalum and aluminium. Capacitors comprising one electrode with an anodic film and the other without are described. Proportions of the ingredients in some electrolytes are given in the Specification. Specifications 387,437 and 713,900 are referred to.
