Abstract

747,169. Internal shoe-drum brakes. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Dec. 8, 1954 [Jan. 5, 1954; Jan. 5, 1954], No. 35534/54. Class 103 (1). In an internal shoe-drum brake, automatic adjustment for shoe clearance is carried out by a pendant member 50 which is caused to be moved downwardly when the brake shoe movement becomes large by the interengagement of an inclined slot 56 thereon with a pin 25 on the back plate so that a spring pawl 72, Fig. 2, moves over a tooth on the ratchet wheel 41 and turns it to rotate a screw threaded member between the shoe ends. In a modified arrangement the pendant member 50 may be moved upwardly to adjust the brake. Fig. 8 shows an arrangement in which a bi-metallic element 100 is secured to the spring pawl 70 so as to flex the end 72 away from the ratchet wheel if the brake should attain such a temperature that there will be appreciable expansion of the brake drum such as to cause false adjustment.
