Abstract
746,978. Rotary pumps. SMOOT, L. P., and MOREHOUSE, G. H.. [trading as MOREHOUSE INDUSTRIES]. Feb. 2, 1954 [May 25, 1953], No. 3045/54. Class 110(2) [Also in Group XXIX] An apparatus for removing air bubbles from a substance such as grease comprises a pump, through which the substance may be continuously circulated, or, under valve control, the pump delivery may be discharged, e.g. to containers. The continuous circulation may be carried out while a filled container is being replaced by an empty one at an outlet 39, to prevent the stopping of the pump. As shown in Fig. 1, a pump 5 with gears 11 sucks grease containing air or gas bubbles from a port 19 to which the grease is supplied by way of a pipe 40 under control of a restricting valve 41, Fig. 2 (not shown). Due to the partial vacuum applied to the grease, as it leaves the valve 41, air bubbles expand and burst, and further de-aeration occurs when the grease is passed through a screen 35. The grease is discharged through a passage 36 in a rotary valve 18. The valve may be rotated in bearings 24, through a handle 31, see Fig. 4, to shut off the delivery port 36, the grease then circulating through the pump. To prevent locking of the pump, during the rotation of the valve 18, recesses 47 are formed in the valve body so that communication between ports 21, 22 will not be broken until the upper end of the passage 32 has partially overlapped the port 21.
