746,701. Rotary kilns. KENNEDY VAN SAUN MANUFACTURING & ENGINEERING CORPORATION. March 15, 1954 [April 9, 1953], No. 7453/54. Class 51(2). A rotary cement or lime kiln 10 has a central heat exchange section comprising parallel chambers defined by the kiln lining 42 and diametral partitions 46 disposed at right angles to one another and formed by pipes 44 extending across the drum and through the outer shell 40, alternate pipes being disposed at right angles to one another, and all the pipes being threaded by refractory blocks 48. As shown in Fig. 4, each block 48 touches that on the next parallel pipe at 50, and may engage the adjacent block by a tongue and groove joint. Air from a blower 76 passes in turn through a stationary duct 64, a rotating duct 58 making an air-tight seal therewith and longitudinal ducts 54 extending over one end of each set of pipes 44, the air being finally discharged from the free end of the pipes. The passage of air through the pipes 44 may be controlled by known apparatus in accordance with its final temperature. The partitions 46 may also be spirally disposed. Hot gases from the furnace are diverted by a baffle 32 into a dust collecting chamber 34 and then used to preheat incoming charge material in a preheater 22 before passing into a stack 36. Normally some of the gases pass directly into stack 36 through a damper controlled outlet 38
