A bobbin supporting device comprises bobbin supports 3 movable into and out of a bobbin supporting position, a rotatable spindle 7 and a collar 15 mounted so as to be slidable in the axial direction of the spindle and means operable as a result of axial movement of the collar to effect rotation of the spindle to permit movement of the supports into or out of the bobbin supporting position. As shown bobbin support levers 3 are pivotally mounted on a pin 2 which extends transversely across the bore of a tubular sleeve 1. The sleeve 1 is provided with slots 5 through which the detent portions 4 of the levers 3 may project. Mounted within the bore 6 of sleeve 1 is spindle 7 which is axially displaceable and also rotat- able during such movement. For this purpose the surface of spindle 7 is provided with eight splines 8, 9, the four splines 8 being situated immediately above and between the four splines 9. The ends of each spline are saw-toothed providing upper and lower cam surfaces 10, 11 and a pin 13 is arranged in the bore of sleeve 1 to project radially into one of the grooves 14 between the splines on the spindle. The spindle 7 is adapted to be moved axially within the bore 6 by a collar 15 arranged exteriorly of sleeve 1 and axially slidable thereon, pins 16, which extend through slots 17 in sleeve 1, being provided to engage groove 18 in spindle 7. The spindle 7 is maintained in the lower position shown, by a compression spring 22. In this position abutment surfaces 20 engage the upper ends of levers 3 so that detents 4 are held radially apart in their bobbin engaging position. Upward axial movement of the collar 15 from this position causes similar movement of the spindle 7 and by engagement of pin 13 with cam surface 11 causes partial rotation of spindle 7. Return axial movement of spindle 7 to the lower position by spring 22 causes pin 13 to engage cam surface 10 to effect further partial rotation of spindle 7 such that slots 21 in spindle 7 now register with the levers 3 and the detent ends 4 of these levers are free to be moved radially inwards out of their bobbin engaging position. Further up and down axial movement of collar 15 when another bobbin is applied to the device rotates the spindle 7 to bring the abutment surfaces 20 on spindle 7 in register with the levers 3 to push the detent portions 4 outwards again into their bobbin supporting position. The device is adapted to be suspended by its upper end so as to be freely rotatable by a universal ball joint 27, 28, 29 on the lower end of a spigot 32 adapted to be fixed in a machine creel.
