Abstract

A sintered metal, particularly for piston rings, bearings and bearing surfaces, consists of 0.5-60 per cent of a nickel-titanium alloy, 0.3-5 per cent carbon and the balance either all ferrous-base metal or all copper or copper-base alloy. The nickel-titanium alloy preferably contains 15-65 per cent titanium and 35-85 per cent nickel. It may also contain 0.3-15 per cent aluminium, up to 2.5 per cent iron and up to 3 per cent silicon. In forming a piston ring the powdered constituents are mixed, compressed and sintered to form briquettes which are then forged to a suitable degree of porosity.
