Abstract
737,328. Photo-clectric sorting apparatus. GUNSON (SEEDS), Ltd., R. W., and TOMBS, D. M. March 25, 1954 [March 27, 1953], No. 8490/53. Class 40 (3). In sorting apparatus of the type in which articles are selectively charged by means of a corona discharge in accordance with their optical characteristics so that, on subsequently falling between charged plates they are selectively deflected a third electrode is provided for controlling the corona discharge. As shown articles to be sorted according to the amount or kind of light which they reflect are fed to a viewing area 11 where light from a source 12 is reflected to a photo-cell 18, and fall between a point electrode 18 and an associated electrode 19 between which a corona discharge may be set up. The articles then fall between charged plates 14, 15 between which a high electrostatic field is set up, finally entering one of two receptacles 17, 16 according as they are or are not charged. The output of the photoelectric cell controlling the charging is used to control the corona discharge by applying it to a ring electrode 21 surrounding the point electrode. A special construction of the ring electrode surrounding a pair of points is shown in Fig. 2. Specification 642,284 is referred to.
