A sound producing device of a toy comprises a resilient arm which is attached to or integral with a sound producing body and which bears against a toothed wheel of a driving mechansim. In Fig. 1 a flywheel driving mechanism 2 rotates an axle 3 of a toy automobile, and a pinion 14 engages one end of a resilient arm 12 which is secured at its other end to the diaphragm of a sound box 6, the arm 12 being positioned either above or below the pinion 14. To make the sound device inoperative, the pinion may be axially displaceable, Fig. 4 (not shown). Fig. 3 shows how a diaphragm 8 is held between rings 10, 11 which may be of rubber or pasteboard, the diaphragm being secured on a wall portion 7 by a ring 9. Modified forms of sound-boxes may comprise diaphragms having an integral wall portion or portions, and the wall may be completed by a strip of paper secured by adhesive, Figs. 7, 8 (not shown). In place of a separate sound-box, the casing 35 of the toy may act as a soundproducing body, Fig. 11, and the pinion engaging arm 36 may be cut from the casing 33, Fig. 13. A friction wheel spark producing device may be embodied with the sound producer, Fig. 14 (not shown). Eccentric means may be provided to cause intermittent engagement of the pinion and resilient arm.
