Abstract

723,056. Sliding window opening and closing apparatus. BECKETT, LAYCOCK & WATKINSON, Ltd. Nov. 20, 1953 [Aug. 21, 1952], No. 21061/52. Class 20 (3). [Also in Group XXXIV] Sliding panels, e.g. windows, doors, &c., are operated, or balanced, by means of a coil spring 17 which is secured to a bobbin 16 rotatably mounted by a pin 15 on a bracket 14 secured to the underside of the lower frame member 11, e.g. of a vertically sliding window 10 of a vehicle, the uncoiled portion 18 of the spring being anchored at 58 to a fixed rail 13 and preferably constrained within a channel guide member, not shown. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 4, the spring 20 is freely housed within a box 28 secured to the lower frame member 11, the open side of the box being directed downwards and the uncoiled portion of the spring being led through a slot in the side of the box. An absorbent lubricating pad 25 is provided on the edge of the slot to wipe the uncoiled portion of the spring as it is led therethrough, the casing being similarly lined to engage the outer surface of the body of the coil. In a modification, Fig. 3, a pad 29 is mounted to ensure continuous contact with the coil as it winds and unwinds, a friction locking device 30, 31 being also provided. For heavy panels a plurality of springs can be mounted side by side in a single casing or they can be so arranged that the unwound portions of the coils are superposed upon one another. When the arrangement is adapted for sliding doors, the coil body is housed in a casing at one end of the track, the free end of the coil being secured to a hanger for the door. In further modifications the coil or coils are mounted in side pillars, or in the lintels, of the panel frames, the free ends of the spring, or springs, being attached to the frames. The springs can also be mounted in boxes, as shown in Fig. 4, one at each lower corner of the panel, with their axes normal to the plane of the panel.
