Abstract
In a method of smelting ores, particularly iron ores, in shaft furnaces which are charged at the top and which are provided with blast tuyeres near the bottom, the furnace is charged with briquettes, preferably of egg-shape, comprising fine-grained ore, a reducing agent consisting partly of caking hard coal and partly of non-caking fuel and a binding agent such as lime, clay, marl or pitch, the height of the charge column within the furnace shaft is maintained at 2-6 metres above the tuyere level, the distance between two opposite furnace walls where the tuyeres are disposed is about 1-3 metres, and the charge column is maintained substantially at the selected height during the smelting operation. The waste gases leaving the furnace shaft are first freed from dust, and then subjected to a condensation process in two stages, a thick tar obtained in the first stage being used as a binding agent for the briquettes which have a volume less than 300 c.c., preferably 40-80 c.c. The ore may also be supplied in lumps of substantially the same size as the briquettes. The blast may be heated to about 500 DEG C. and mixed with oxygen or a cold blast containing additional oxygen may be used. A typical composition for the briquettes is: 32 per cent non-caking hard coal, 11 per cent caking hard coal, 36.5 per cent iron ore, 14.5 per cent limestone, 2 per cent tar pitch, and 4 per cent thick tar (from the aforementioned condensing stage). The grain size of the ore and limestone is 0-3 mms. and of the coal 0-5 mms.
