Abstract
729,104. Extruding. HYDROPRESS, Inc. June 12, 1953 [June 21, 1952], No. 16201/53. Class 83 (4). An extrusion press has a mandrel 18 reciprocable within a bore 19 of the extrusion plunger 17, and cooling fluid is admitted to the bore 19 for cooling the mandrel. The latter is connected to a ram 21 movable in a hydraulic cylinder 22 secured to the main ram 13. A valve 31 on the ram 21 engages a seat 30 when the mandrel is withdrawn rearwardly and the cooling fluid is then supplied through a conduit 29 to a chamber 28 which communicates with the bore 19. Longitudinal grooves may be provided in the periphery of the mandrel or in the wall of the bore 19 to facilitate the passage of cooling fluid. An air vent 40 is provided. In another embodiment the mandrel passes through the main ram and is actuated by a hydraulic ram separate from and disposed to the rear of the main ram.
