Abstract

727,457. Casting composite articles. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Aug. 4, 1953 [Aug. 8, 1952], No. 21425/53. Class 83 (1). A method of impregnating a porous metal article with another metal of lower melting- point comprises applying to the surface of the article, by electrodeposition, an adherent coating of the impregnating metal, and heating the impregnating metal and the article to a temperature above the melting-point of the impregnating metal and below the melting-point of the porous metal for a time sufficient to cause infiltration of the impregnating metal into the porous structure of the article. The impregnating metal may be a cuprous metal such as copper and the porous metal iron. Iron may be added to the copper to reduce solution of the copper with the iron of the porous body. Bronze may be impregnated with lead. Specification 571,128 is referred to.
