Abstract
727,356. Hose couplings. GIRLING, Ltd. Feb. 18, 1954 [March 11, 1953], No. 6683/53. Class 99 (1). In a coupling, e.g. for high pressure hoses used in hydraulic braking systems, wherein a rigid tubular liner 16 is inserted in the end of the hose 10 and the hose is received within a rigid sleeve 14, the sleeve intermediate its ends is deformed inwardly at angularly spaced points to form portions 18 curved concavely in a plane including the axis of the coupling, those portions being separated by relatively narrow, longitudinally-extending hollow ribs or pleats 19 into which the material of the hose is forced as shown at 20 to form positive keys against relative angular movement between the hose and sleeve. The ribs 19 which may be of Vee or truncated conical section, are substantially narrower than the portions 18 and have outer edges which are substantially straight and parallel to the axis of the coupling. The sleeve 14 may have a screwthreaded spigot and be counterbored to receive the liner 16 ; alternatively, the liner forms an integral part of the sleeve. The depressions 18 may be formed by three or more punches. Preferably, four punches are employed, the punches being movable simultaneously along radii spaced at angles of 90 degrees and the length of the punches being about one third of the length of the sleeve.
