Abstract
727,200. Bending glass sheets. FOLKES, G. E., (Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass Co.). March 7, 1953, No. 6361/53. Class 56. In apparatus for bending glass sheets wherein the mould comprises a central section 18 and end sections 23 hinged thereto, at least one of the end sections is pivoted, at 33, on swinging supports 13, the arrangement of the suspension being such that the end sections are counterbalanced against the weight of the central section until the glass softens and sags, whereupon the counterbalance is upset and the mould closes. This minimises any tendency of the glass, while positioned as a strut across the end sections, to shatter due to the weight of the mould. Portions 36 of the end sections are movably mounted thereon. In one position these portions support the ends of the flat glass sheets; in the other, as shown, they align with the rest of the surface of the sections and complete the shaping surface of the mould.
