726,838. Marking bore hole cores to facilitate orientation. CRAELIUS CO., Ltd. Jan. 18, 1954 [Jan. 30, 1953], No. 2715/53. Class 85. A method of determining the orientation of strata in a bore hole comprises making an index mark on a core before it is broken from its bore hole, positively locating a compass in a determinable position relative to the mark or to the marking means, and locking the compass before breaking the core from the bore hole. A compass 7 is mounted in a housing 6 secured to the inner non- rotating barrel of boring apparatus, and the compass can be locked by downward movement of a cover 8 actuated by a " godevil " striking the top of a plunger 17 and thus releasing a piston member 15 contacting the cover 8, Alternatively looking of the compass may be effected by a mechanical trip device actuated by clockwork, by electronic means,'by radio transmission, or by a lost motion device controlled by vertical movement of the boring equipment.
