Abstract

726,532. Heavy water. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Feb. 14,1944 [Feb. 15, 1943], No. 2510/43. Drawings to Specification. Class 14. Heavy water or water enriched in heavy water is made by multi-stage electrolysis with reconversion to water of the hydrogen from one or more of the second and succeeding stages, the hydrogen being caused to react with oxygen in the presence of a catalyst and the temperature of the reaction being maintained low to favour the forward reaction 2H 2 +O 2 # 2H 2 O by circulating steam through the reaction vessel in contact with the reactants, and through an external cooler. Part of the circulating steam, corresponding to the amount produced by the combustion of the hydrogen, is fed, after being condensed, into an electrolytic cell preceding the one from which the. hydrogen was evolved. The catalyst used may be a bed of platinum.
