Abstract
In a method of making a body such as a grinding tool in which abrasive grains are embedded in a metallic bonding medium, adhesion is facilitated by coating the grains with a base layer of a platinum group metal followed by a coating of iron, nickel or cobalt. The depth of the final coating is about ten times the diameter of its molecules. The bonding medium may be iron, nickel, cobalt or copper and may be applied in the molten state to a backing disc and the grains then distributed into it. Alternatively the coated grains are distributed on to the disc and the bonding deposited electrolytically. In another modification the embedding of the grains in the bonding medium is effected by a sintering process. When the base layer is to be palladium, the grains are given a preliminary treatment with a stannous chloride solution followed by rinsing and treatment with a solution containing the base metal. The main coating may then be applied by a treatment with a solution containing the coating metal or by means of the carbonyl of the coating metal, for example, by heating the grains to 100 DEG -130 DEG C. and allowing them to fall through a chamber containing gaseous nickel carbonyl.
