Abstract
711,405. Disc brakes. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd. April 8, 1953 [April 8, 1952], No. 8980/52. Class 103(1) In a spot type disc brake the carrier member 17, Figs. 1 and 2, which at its outer end is troughshaped so as to extend on both sides of the disc 10, and which carries fluid pressure actuator pistons 28, is mounted so as to pivot around a shaft 16 the axis of which is parallel with, and adjacent to, the plane of the disc 10. As shown, in Figs. 1 and 2, the pivot axis 16 lies actually within the plane of the disc 10. An attachment member 14 bolted to a flange (not shown), on the stub axle has an ear member 48 which projects into slot 46 between parts 47 of the member 17 and supports it against the the torque loading applied thereto. The fluid pressure pistons include automatic shoe clearance adjustment mechanism comprising a split ring 49 expanded by a washer type spring 52, the ring limiting the return movement of the piston. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the disc 55 is mounted on a stub axle and the carrier member 57 which encloses a part of the periphery of the disc is pivoted upon a shaft 62 which is parallel with but slightly displaced from the plane of the disc 55. The fluid pressure pistons include similar automatic adjustment mechanism comprising a split ring 81 and spring 83. Although two pistons and pad units are shown there may be a single: piston or pad on each side of the disc.
