Class 69 (1) A reinforced concrete tank has pre-stressed side walls supported on an annular foundation and the base of the tank is formed of sheet metal the peripheral margin of which is bonded, keyed or otherwise interlocked in a leakproof manner with the side walls or the foundation. The base may have an upwardly domed surface resting on the ground and may be of such thickness that it assumes a downwardly domed shape when the tank is filled to a predetermined level. In one form, Fig. 1, the peripheral margin of the upwardly domed steel plate floor 2 is embedded into the annular foundation 1 and the pre-stressed side walls 9 are mounted on the foundation. The floor margin may have holes 4, Fig. 2, to key it into place, and the margin also may be cut radially as at 5 and the tongues so formed twisted to assist in keying. The floor may be built up of several sheets welded, riveted or otherwise joined together. In another form, Fig. 4, the flat floor 11 of steel plate is formed with an upwardly extending flange 12, which rests on the annular foundation 1 and wall 9 is then cast so that the flange extends into it. Alternatively, the wall may be cast so that its base is located within he flange. The pre-stressing of the walls may be effected by hooping reinforcing wires therearound and tensioning the wires as described in Specification 691,003. In addition, vertical pre-stressing wires may be located in grooves on the outside of the walls, and covered by cement after tensioning.
