Abstract
Coal is crushed underground and converted into a pumpable pulp by the addition of water. It is pumped to the surface and there the coal is separated from the ash by filtering, centrifuging or the like. The pulp is treated either underground or on the surface with a wetting agent to render the coal water-repellent, and thus allow the selective filtering &c. of the pulp.
