Abstract
710,837. Aerating waste water. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. Oct. 8, 1952, No. 25190/52. Class 111. [Also in Groups VI, XII and XXVIII] Apparatus for aerating waste water in a biological purification process comprises an upwardly directed convergent-divergent nozzle through which the liquid flows, a horizontal gas inlet in the region of the nozzle throat and after the nozzle an unobstructed rising conduit having a flow cross-section greater than that of the nozzle outlet. A mixing tower comprises a liquid inlet chamber 1 separated from an upper chamber 6 by a double-walled partition 3 penetrated by a large number of convergent-divergent nozzles 4 and constituting a gas inlet space which is supplied from a pipe 7 and annular chamber 8. The nozzles may be rectangular or circular in cross-section and the throat suddenly widens between the lower and upper edges of the gas inlet slot 5. Liquid flows through the nozzles at at least 5 m. per sec. and, the cross-sectioned area of the upper chamber being at least 20 times the total area of the nozzle throats, the gasliquid mixture becomes turbulent until at some distance from the nozzles liquid is withdrawn through a pipe 13 the washed gas escaping through a pipe 12. A gas blower may supplement the suction action of the nozzles.
