Class 120(3) [Also in Group VIII] A machine for testing the wear-resisting properties of yarns, threads, or like textile material or the suitability of various machine components for use with the material, comprises in combination a pair of guides for the material, a loaded abrading and flexing body about which the material can be passed and so disposed centrally between the guides as to flex the material at a predetermined angle, the load on the body serving to maintain the material under a known tension. In the application of the apparatus shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a short length of yarn Y is clamped at one end by a screwed device 16 and it is passed via fixed eye guides 23, 24, upper pulleys 3, lower pulleys 4, around a vertically-adjustable abrading and flexing test body or blade 7 comprising a knifeedge 7a, to a tensioning device 17 comprising a hand-operated drum 19, on which the yarn is wound, and pawl 21 and ratchet 22 control: the body 7 may be loaded by a spring or, as shown, by a weight 27 with which is associated a cord 28 and pulleys 29, 30, 31, so arranged that the tension in the yarn remains constant despite variation in the angular position of the body 7. A motor 11 drives through a cam, or, as shown, a disc 12 and crank pin 13 engaging in a slot 14 in a limb 15 of a pivoted frame 1 to oscillate the frame about pintles 8 and 9, and is run until the yarn breaks; the motor is arrested automatically or otherwise, the number of complete oscillations being recorded on a counter 25 to provide a comparative measurement of the properties investigated. The apparatus shown in Figs. 3 and 4 comprises an inclined plane formed by cross-members 42 and rails 41 constituting tracks for the wheels 40 of a trolley 39 mounting a motor 45 which drives through a disc 48 and crank pin 49 engaging a slot in a bracket 50 to oscillate a carrier plate 35 for a test body 7<SP>1</SP>. A running length Y<SP>1</SP> of yarn to be tested is led off a package 59 to a motor 61 driven reel 62 via loose pulleys 58 and 36, feed rollers 60, and the edge of the body 7: a fixed length may be anchored by securing devices (not shown) replacing the pulley 58. During the test of the yarn to destruction, the load on the yarn may be increased by elevating the rails 41 about a hinge by means of an electric motor 56 driving through gears 55, 54, 53, and rack 52. A " yarn against yarn reaction " test may be carried out by passing a short length of yarn around a loose pulley 64, engaging it with guide pins, as at 63, twisting at T, and anchoring the ends in securing devices 65, replacing the pulleys 36, Fig. 5.
