Abstract

Level dyeings or prints on nylon textile fibres are obtained by dyeing or printing with one or more dyestuffs capable of dyeing nylon in the presence of a levelling agent comprising a water-soluble condensation product of urea or formaldehyde with a sulphonic acid of an aromatic compound containing one or more phenolic hydroxyl groups, or a water-soluble salt of the condensation product. The levelling agent is preferably a condensation product of urea or formaldehyde with a mono-, di- or tri-sulphonic acid of phenol, a cresol or a naphthol, specified agents being those known under the names "Tamol-G.A." and "Paralene 23344" and under the Registered Trade Mark "Erional NW". The levelling agent may be applied in aqueous solution together with or before the dyestuff, e.g., an acid-, chrome-, pre-metallized-, water-soluble or dispersed acetate- or direct cotton-dyestuff. When dyestuffs capable of dyeing wool are employed, treatment with an acid, e.g., acetic, hydrochloric, sulphuric, lactic or boric acid, or an ammonium salt of an acid, is preferably effected before the application of the levelling agent and the dyestuff or after the application of the levelling agent and before or after the application of the dyestuff. The dyeing liquor or paste may also contain Glauber's salt, Epsom salt, potassium chloride, sodium chloride, ammonium chloride and/or a wetting agent. Admixtures of nylon fibres with those of cotton, wool, rayon, casein, cellulose acetate, chlorinated wool and those known under the Registered Trade Marks "Ardil", "Terylene" and "Fibro", in the form of yarns, fabrics or made-up garments may be treated.
