Abstract

A synthetic resinous material is given a polyhedral cellular structure by admixing at least two constituents each consisting of a fine dispersion in an inert carrier of a substance capable of reacting with the substance or substances in the one or more other constituents to generate a gas to expand the resin. Suitable inert carriers are starch, synthetic resins, e.g. polyvinyl chloride or polystyrene, and solvents and plasticizers, e.g. dibutyl phthalate. A reaction constituent may be mixed in the form of a solution in the case of a solid carrier, the solvent being subsequently drawn off. In the examples: 1 (a) sodium nitrite dissolved in ethanol/water is homogenized with polyvinyl chloride, the mixture dried and comminuted; (b) ammonium sulphate dissolved in 0.1 per cent. aqueous soap solution is mixed with powdered polyvinyl chloride and the mixture dried and comminuted. Equal amounts of the two ingredients (a) and (b) are mixed together with dibutyl phthalate as plasticizer and moulded as described in Specifications 652,696 and 660,358. In example 2, the reacting constituents are ammonium nitrate in polystyrene, and sodium nitrite in polyvinyl chloride, and are used for expanding a mixture of rubber and polyvinyl chloride. In example 3, ammonium bicarbonate and amyl nitrite, both in dibutyl phthalate, are used with polyvinyl chloride.
