Abstract

714,400. Hydraulic brakes. HENRY, H. P. Nov. 14, 1952 [Jan. 29, 1952], No. 28822/52. Class 103(1) [Also in Group XXXII] A coupling hitch between towing and trailer vehicles actuates the trailer brakes, when relative closing movement takes place between the two vehicles, by moving a pilot piston 21 mounted on the coupling into a cylinder 25 in draw gear 24 to force liquid from the cylinder through a hole 58 to the trailer brake cylinders. When it is required to back the trailer, the towing vehicle is reversed to move the piston 21 into the cylinder 25 thus compressing the liquid in the cylinder and applying the trailer brakes. Further reversing of the towing vehicle increases the compression which causes the ball 55 to unseat to give relief and allow further entry of the piston, which further entry effects release of the brakes by permitting a prod 53 on the piston to further unseat the ball and cause rapid bleeding of the cylinder via duct 61 to the reservoir 48. The cylinder may be replenished from the reservoir through a passage 63, Fig. 4, the part 64 however being closed by the piston when it moves to the right of the cylinder.
