Class 145 (1) A wood chipping device comprises a housing arranged to support a cylindrical rotor for rotation with its axis in a horizontal position, a plurality of chipping knives attached to the cylindrical surface of the rotor and an inlet structure for feeding the material to the rotor, the structure having a channel with a substantially horizontal floor located at least as low as the horizontal tangent to the bottom of the cylindrical rotor. A delivery duct to change the direction of delivery of the chopped-up wood may be fitted and has a shape to give the wood an upward component to prevent clogging of the duct. The rotor 13 is mounted on an axle carrying a pulley 18 for connection to a source of power. The rotor revolves in the direction shown by arrow 21 and carries knives 22 peripherally spaced longitudinally. They are preferably held at an angle to the radial direction, and the outer edges are bevelled to lie approximately in a tangential plane. The blades are retained by wedges 24 and capscrews 25, and rods 26 controlled by screws 27 regulate the projection of the blades, the inner ends of which rest against the rods. The knives co-act with a fixed blade 28. The horizontal floor 31 is contained by a pivoted plate 32 urged by springs 36 towards the rotor blades and positioned by a pin 35 working in the slot 34. The device may be mounted in a truck or on a tractor.
