Abstract
A synthetic resin is made by etherifying at least one phenolic hydroxyl group of a natural catechol tanning agent with mono-chloro- or mono-bromoacetic or propionic acid, by reaction in an alkaline medium with not more than 2 mols. of the acid per mol. of tanning agent and etherifying at least one of the remaining phenolic hydroxyl groups by reaction with an aralkyl halide in an alkaline aqueous medium. The products are soluble in organic solvents such as mixtures of benzene or toluene and methyl or ethyl alcohol. In the example, quebracho extract is reacted with monochloracetic acid in the presence of caustic soda, and the resulting product is reacted with benzyl chloride; the product is poured and allowed to solidify in a tray, the resulting soapy mass being added to cold aqueous hydrochloric acid and the resin removed by filtration. The final product is considered to be a quebrachomonocarboxymethyl dibenzyl- or -di(carboxymethyl) monobenzyl-tri-ether according to the molar proportions of the reactants employed. The products may be used in compositions for coating leather, cloth and paper.ALSO:A synthetic resin is made by etherifying at least one phenolic hydroxyl group of a natural catechol tanning agent with mono-chloro- or mono-bromo-acetic or propionic acid by reaction in p an alkaline medium with not more than 2 mols. of the acid per mol. of tanning agent, and etherifying at least one of the remaining phenolic hydroxyl groups by reaction with an aralkyl halide in an alkaline aqueous medium.
