Abstract
703,350. Cable stoppers. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Dec. 18, 1950 [Dec. 19, 1949], No. 32538/49. Class 78 (2) A cable stopper comprises a wedge 11 slidable in a sheath 12, 13 and around which the cable 22 is passed so as to be gripped between the wedge and the inclined gripping portions 14, 15 of the sheath and is characterised in that a holding member 17 extends through a.hole 16 formed to receive it in the wedge 11 and through two holes 20, 21 formed in the faces or cheeks of the sheath, at least two of the three holes being elongated in the direction in which the wedge is slidable, and the holding member 17 being slidable through the holes throughout the travel of the wedge between its gripping and retracted positions. The stopper device, Fig. 3, is secured to a fixture by links 50 and secures the rope 22 in the gripping-right-hand position of the wedge 11, the wedge for rope-threading purposes being held in the left-hand retracted position by the engagement of heads 18 or 19 of holding member 17 in the respective hole 20 or 21 of a cheek 12 or 13. The rope, after being threaded therethrough, is lightly held by knurled nut 29 and the holding member 17 is then pressed by the thumb to release the wedge which slides into gripping position when the rope is pulled. Heads 18 and 19 are relatively offset so that head 19 does not fall into hole 21 to jam the wedge. Two devices (Fig. 1) like Fig. 3 are incorporated into the same stopper ; each wedge 11 having an additional peg 31 sliding in slot 32 to give orientation, and the rope surfaces being grooved.
