Abstract

703,051. Rotary pumps. SUNDSTRAND MACHINE -TOOL CO: June 27, 1952, No. 16222/52. Class 110 (2) In a pumping plant for supplying oil to a burner, one pump 12 evacuates the surplus oil and air from the upper part of a reservoir 20 and returns the oil to a supply tank 178, a second pump 13 having an inlet 50 which is below the level of the oil in the reservoir. The excess of oil from the pump 13 is returned to the supply tank 178, or reservoir 20. A burner feed 19 is controlled by a valve 65, which is opened against the pressure of a spring 69 by the delivery pressure in a chamber 52. The valve slides in a sleeve 63 and has sealing rings 91, 92, 93. Any leakage from an annular groove 81, past the rings 93, flows through a drain 77, 95, 46 and back to the reservoir. Packing rings 96, 97 are provided and a further drain 98. The delivery from pump 12 passes through ducts 44, 45 and 46 back to the reservoir 20. Excess delivery oil from the pump 13 is byepassed back to the reservoir through a port 76, when it is uncovered by the valve 65, and the recess 77 and duct 78. A number of passages 80 connect the chamber 52 with the groove' 81, which is opened to the port 76 when the valve 65 moves downwards. The pumps 12, 13 are of the internally-meshing gear type, but other types may be used. The pumps are driven by a shaft 14 and have a partition plate 26 between them and are surrounded by a filter 1.6. The outer casing is in two parts 10, 11. A pressure gauge may be attached at 64. Both pumps may be used to evacuate the air from the reservoir 20 and suck up oil from the tank 178, through a pipe 177. The pump 12 is supplied through a duct 40 and discharges through ducts 42, 43 and chambers 44, 44a, 44b, 44c and recess 45 leading to a duct 45a. Fig. 4 shows another arrangement of the pumping system. In a further arrangement 'the inlet pipe 40 is bisected by the oil level in the reservoir 20, Fig. 5 (not shown).
