Abstract
701,853. Cathode-ray tubes; luminescent materials. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Oct. 16, 1951 [Oct. 24, 1950], No. 24103/51. Class 39(1) A cathode-ray tube screen for producing coloured images comprises a plurality of uniform, mono-particle thick layers of phosphors capable of producing different colours under cathode ray excitation, the layers preferably being separated by uniform and transparent electronenergy absorbing films. The layer 2 nearest the end wall of the tube is preferably a green phosphor, such as willemite, zinc orthosilicate or magnesium aluminate, and may be of any desired thickness; the next layer 3 is preferably a blue phosphor, such as zinc sulphide or calcium magnesium silicate, and the next layer 4 a red phosphor such as zinc-cadmium sulphide, magnesium silicate, magnesium germanate or magnesium phosphate, the blue and red layers being mono-particle thick. The electron absorbing layers 5, 6 separating the phosphors may be of silica, mica, or alkali silicate and serve to prevent the excitation of a phosphor layer beyond the desired layer. Using layer thicknesses of 2.8Á, 6.1Á and 19.3Á for the red, blue and green phosphors respectively the layers may be excited by electron beams of 10 kV, 18kV and 32 kV energy respectively; with thicknesses of 0.5Á, 4.1Á, and 29Á the required energies are 6 kV, 12 kV and 25 kV. In applying the cathode-ray tube to reception of colour television the colour signals may be applied to the screen to modulate the energy of the electron beam approaching it and thus select the required colour. Specification 686,259 is referred to.
