Abstract

701,513. Fluid-pressure servomotor-control systems; valve closure members. NORTHROP AIRCRAFT, Inc. April 13, 1950 [Oct. 25, 1949], No. 9134/50. Class 135 In a hydraulic control valve of the kind described in Specifications 701,092 and 701,504 for use in a hydraulic servomotor control system for the full power operation of aircraft control surfaces the groups of flow holes which meter the pressure liquid to and from the servomotor cylinder and in the neutral position of the valve permit a restricted flow to both sides of the servomotor piston to hydraulically lock it and render it ineffective from external loads applied to the control surface are reduced to two groups arranged in the valve sleeve. As shown, a valve spool 35, Fig. 3, slidably mounted in a ported sleeve 30 secured in a housing 19 between guide and cap members 31, 34 is formed with lands 59 which co-operate with groups of flow holes 76, Fig. 4, formed in the sleeve 30 and opening into grooves 66, 72 communicating respectively through housing passages 75, 75a with opposite ends of the servomotor cylinder. The diameters of the individual holes and the arrangement of the holes in the groups is such that in the neutral position of the valve, Fig. 3, one half of each end hole in each group is uncovered to permit a restricted flow of pressure liquid to each side of the piston and on movement of the valve spool from its neutral position in either direction one side of the piston is progressively opened to the pressure supply port 71 and the other side to the return port 62. The holes are spaced radially around the sleeve and staggered lengthwise thereof.
