701,494. Lubricating. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. Aug. 1, 1952 [Aug. 7, 1951], No. 19522/52. Class 12(3) A rod for reciprocating in a substantially vertical direction is provided with a lubricant-collecting ring surrounding the rod and opening out downwardly. As shown in Fig. 1, a piston rod 1 is provided with a ring 6 which may be conical on the inner side and cylindrical on the outer side. The rod is shielded by a box 7 provided with an opening 9 from which the collected lubricant can flow. The rod receives lubricant by splash lubrication from oil in a crank-case 5. In the hot-gas reciprocating engine shown, in part, in Fig. 3, the rod 22 reciprocates in a guide 33 which is formed with a recess 32 to collect oil from the ring 30. The recess accommodates the ring at the bottom of the stroke and the lubricant may be withdrawn by way of a passage 34 in the guide 33.
