Abstract
701,031. Luminescent materials. GUNTHER, G. G. J., ANDERSON, G. G. B., and LUMALAMPEN AKTIEBOLAG. March 25, 1949, No. 8211/49. Class 39(1) Luminescent material comprises a sintered material containing a composite orthophosphate of aluminium and at least one metal of the second group of the periodic system having an atomic weight less than 200, activated by cerium in trivalent form. The molar ratio of Al 2 O 3 : MeO in the material lies within the limits 3: 1 and 1:3, preferably 1:1. The cerium is contained in the material to the amount of 0.1-20 per cent, measured as Ce 2 O3. The sintering process can either be effected in one stage in damp hydrogen, or heating may be effective first in air to 1000-1250‹C (which partially oxidizes the cerium to tetravalent form), and thereafter in a hydrogen atmosphere for reduction of the cerium to trivalent form. Increased intensity of the material and displacements of the emission spectrum are obtained by minor admixtures of metals acting either as secondary activating agents or to increase absorption, e.g. at least one of the metals Pb, La, Zr, Bi, U, Tl and V. Methods of preparing composite phosphates of Al with Mg, Zn, Ca, Ca, and Ba, Sr and Zn, Ca and Ba and Mg, Sr and Mg, and Be are described. Specifications 512,154 and 645,335 are referred to.
