Abstract

700,534. Brake shoes. AUSTIN MOTOR CO., Ltd., and RIX, J. R. Aug. 5, 1952 [Aug. 13, 1951], No. 18976/51. Class 103(1) In a fabricated brake shoe, the working surface of the brake lining when not under load is of transversely and outwardly concave form, so that it becomes transversely flat under full load due to deflection of the shoe head. The brake shoe comprises 'a web portion 10 to which an arcuate head plate 11, of transversely and outwardly concave form, is secured by welding at 12. Secured to the head plate 11 is a brake lining 13 of complementary shape and uniform thickness. When light rubbing loading is applied, only the longitudinal marginal edge portions of the working surface 14x of the lining 13 make contact with the brake drum 15. As the loading increases, the surface area of the lining in contact with the drum will increase as the concavity of the brake lining 13 is in full contact with the drum 15. An alternative arrangement is described where the head plate 11 is transversely flat and only the working surface of the lining 13 is of transversely and outwardly concave form.
