Abstract
700,198. Fluid-pressure servomotor control systems. BORG-WARNER CORPORATION. April 10, 1951 [April 13, 1950], No. 8279/51. Class 135 A pressure relief valve comprises a main valve member 12 seated by spring and inlet pressures and opened by a piston 27 when pressure is applied to the lower side thereof under the control of a spring-loaded auxiliary valve member 17 seating on the piston and exposed to inlet pressure through a passage 15. The valve member 17 has an enlargement 34 which is engaged by a stem 36 against which bears an abutment 38 for the adjustable loading spring 32. The upper end of the stem 36 is situated in a chamber which is vented by a passage 63 to the main outlet 7, and the cross-sectional area of the stem 36 is made equal to that of the enlargement 34 less the area of the valve member 17 exposed to pressure in the passage 15 whereby the degree of opening of the valve member 17 is unaffected by pressure in the space below the piston 27. Alternatively, the areas of the stem and enlargement may be varied to obtain desired characteristics. As the piston 27 rises consequent upon opening of the valve member 17 the latter follows the movement of the piston so that the length of the spring 32 is substantially the same whether the main valve member be open or closed. A vent 65 enables the piston to descend when the valve member 17 closes.
