Abstract

Polyacrylonitrile and polymers containing a predominating amount of acrylonitrile are treated with a medium exclusively consisting of ammonia or an aliphatic amine or with a solution of an aliphatic amine, preferred amines being n-butylamine, ethylene diamine and diethylene triamine. Other amines which may be used are methyl-, ethyl- and propylamines, propylene- and butylenediamines, N-methyl-trimethylenediamine, ass.N - dimethyl - tri - methylene diamine, N-cyclohexyltrimethylene-diamine, N-phenylethylenediamine, di-(g -amino propyl)-amine, N.N1 - bis - (g - aminopropyl) - trimethylenediamine, N.N1 - bis - (g - aminopropyl) - tetramethylenediamine, and N.N1 - dibutylpropylene - diamine. The amine may be dissolved in water or an organic solvent, or may be employed undiluted in the liquid or vapour phase. Examples describe the treatment of copolymers of acrylonitrile and vinyl acetate. The products of the reaction have increased affinity for dyes. Specification 10378/14, [Class 2 (3)], is referred to.
