Abstract

A process of continuous suspension polymerization comprises continuously adding a normally liquid, catalyst containing, vinyl compound, such as styrene, dichlorostyrene, methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, vinyl acetate and mixtures thereof, to a liquid suspension medium, in which the vinyl compound is substantially insoluble, such as water, mechanically dispersing the vinyl compound as globules to form a suspension, and then circulating the suspension in a single vessel until polymerization is complete, liquid medium being continuously supplied and withdrawn to and from the vessel, the suspension being maintained at polymerization temperature and bubbles of an inert gas being introduced into the vessel below the surface of the suspension, whilst the globules of polymer which settle out are separated off. Polymerization catalysts specified are benzoyl, acetyl, and acetyl benzoyl peroxides. The suspension medium preferably contains a dispersant, which in the case of an aqueous medium may be bentonite, gelatin, pectin, polyvinyl alcohol, methyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, an alginate, starch, or the water-soluble adduct of maleic anhydride and styrene. The monomers may be bodied prior to polymerization either by adding polymer to the monomer or by partial polymerization of the monomer in bulk.
