Abstract
Aminoplasts are hardened with a latent catalyst which is an alkyl ester of a para-alkyl benzene sulphonic acid in which each alkyl group is of 1-4 carbon atoms. Specified aminoplasts are condensates of formaldehyde with urea, melamine and urea-thiourea. The catalyst may be added to the aminoplast alone, extended with an inert filler, e.g. clay, or as an alcoholic solution. In examples, (1) A glue is made by adding an intimate mixture of methyl para-toluene sulphonate, ethyl para-toluene sulphonate and china clay to a urea-formaldehyde cement. (2) Cotton cloth is impregnated with an aqueous solution of methylol melamine to which has been aded ethyl para-toluene sulphonate dissolved in methylated spirits (see Group IV (c)). According to the Provisional Specification, the alkyl group may contain 1-6 carbon atoms.ALSO:Cotton cloth is rendered shrinkproof and crease resistant by dipping it into an aqueous solution of methylol melamine to which has been added an alcoholic solution of ethyl para-toluene sulphonate as a curing catalyst and heating the cloth at 95 DEG C for 10 minutes.
