Class 140 In a drafting apron for textile machinery consisting of an elastomeric material such as natural or synthetic rubber, the reinforcement, consisting of circumferential ties of continuous synthetic monofils or of non-twisted bundles of continuous synthetic monofils extending substantially parallel with one another circumferentially of the apron, is situated in a zone nearer the outer fibre-contacting surface than to the inner roller-contacting surface of the apron. The rubber of either or both layers of the apron may preferably be of the butadieneacrylonitrile copolymer type, and either layer may be compounded with or without carbon black; both layers may be compounded with suitable vulcanizing and accelerating agents and anti-oxidants. Preferably the monofils are of high tensile strength. Materials specified include regenerated cellulose and cellulose ester rayon, copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate or cyanide or vinylidene chloride, polyurethanes and polyamides. As shown (Figs. 3 and 5) the drafting apron comprises a relatively thin outer fibre contacting layer of rubber 1 having a matte fibre working surface 4, a relatively thick inner roller contacting layer of rubber 2 and an interposed reinforcement layer 3 comprising single monofils 6 (Fig. 3) or untwisted bundles of monofils 7 (Fig. 5), preferably of nylon or perlon "U". The apron may be manufactured by wrapping a sheet of unvulcanised rubber preferably containing carbon black upon a mandril to form the layer 2, and scarf-jointing the meeting edges. Helical convolutions of the reinforcement may then be wound, with or without adhesive, upon the scarfed sheet. A further thin sheet of rubber, preferably free from carbon black, is then wrapped with or without adhesive round the convolutions and its meeting edges scarfjointed. The assembly may then be vulcanized and the outer surface ground smooth as necessary.
