Abstract

Wax disulphide is prepared by reacting sodium disulphide and a chlorinated paraffin wax. In an example, sodium disulphide is dissolved in water and sulphur dissolved in the solution, which is then added to a chlorinated paraffin wax together with alcohol and naphtha. After heating in an autoclave at 150 DEG C. for 10 hours, the mixture is cooled, water added and two layers separated. The wax disulphide is separated from the naphtha layer by drying over anhydrous sodium sulphate, filtering and distilling off the naphtha.ALSO:Normally liquid lubricating compositions comprise 50-95 per cent. by weight of a phosphorus-containing organic compound, 0.25-5 per cent. by weight of an organic epoxy compound and 0.025-2 per cent. by weight of an oil-soluble organic sulphide or disulphide. Phosphorus-containing compounds specified are tributyl, dibutyl octyl, triamyl, tri-2-ethylbutyl, tri-n-hexyl, tri-2-ethylhexyl, tri-n-octyl, tri (3, 5, 5-trimethylhexyl), and tri-n-nonyl phosphates; tricresyl, diphenyl cresyl, trixylyl and tripseudocumyl phosphates; diphenyl o-chloro-phenyl, diphenyl octyl, and diphenyl ethyl phosphates; tributyl phosphate; dioctyl isooctene, di-n-butyl n-octane, dimethyl tetradecane and dioctyl styrene phosphonates; tri-2-chloroethyl phosphate and the phosphate of 3-hydroxy-propyl amyl sulphide; tri-butoxyethyl, tributoxyoctyl and tri (trimethyl cyclohexyl carbinyl) phosphates, butyl benzene-butane, butyl dibutane and butyl benzene methoxymethane phosphinates; trialkyl and triaryl phosphine oxides, such as bis (2-ethylhexyl) phenyl phosphine oxide; bis (di-n-butyl phosphono) 1, 6-hexane, bis (di-n-butyl phosphono) 1, 4-butane; and tri-b (di-n-butyl phosphono) ethyl phosphate. Epoxy compounds referred to are pinene and styrene oxides; glycidyl phenyl ether, glycidyl cyclohexyl ether, glycidyl o-cresyl ether, glycidyl methyl ether, glycidyl ethyl ether and glycidyl isopropyl ether; isobutylene oxide, ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, isoprene oxide, decene oxide, and butadiene monoxide; epichlorohydrin, glycide, chloroprene oxide, cyclohexylene oxide and cyclopentene oxide. Sulphides and disulphides referred to are butyl, dioctyl, dinonyl, dilauryl, distearyl, diheptadecyl, dibenzyl, diphenyl, dixylyl and dinaphthyl disulphides; alkylaryl disulphides; sulphurized olefines; sulphurized terpenes such as the reaction product of pinene and phosphorus pentasulphide; paraffin wax disulphide; and sulphurized animal oils, sulphurized esters of unsaturated fatty acids with alcohols such as methyl, ethyl and propyl alcohols, sulphurized sperm oil and sulphurized jojoba oil. The compositions may also contain polyisobutene, polymerized organic silicones, and polymerized styrene and vinyl compounds such as alkylated styrene polymers; polymerized acrylic and methacrylic acid esters; hydroxyaromatic acids, alkyl malonic acids, polyvalent metal sulphonates, amines, amino phenols and other substituted phenols; halogenated hydrocarbons such as methylene iodide; mineral oils, and synthetic oils such as polymers of alkylene oxides or glycols, such as polymerized 1-2 propylene oxide and polymerized trimethylene oxide, and esters of dicarboxylic acids such as sebacates and adipates, for example di (2-ethyl-hexyl) sebacate.
