693,003. Hydraulic couplings. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. May 21, 1951 [March 10, 1950], No. 6042/50. Class 69(ii) A hydrokinetic power transmission apparatus comprises a free flow impeller, a turbine driven by liquid impulse from the impeller, a non-rotating injector adapted to receive liquid from an external source and having an opening or openings just clear of the inlet edges of the impeller blades, means associated with the injector located close to said opening for varying the effective mass flow of the liquid therefrom into the impeller and means for leading spent liquid freely from the turbine and clear of the impeller so as to avoid recirculation therethrough. An impeller A is mounted on a driving shaft K and a turbine wheel B on a driven shaft M, in a casing N having a deflector plate E and a baffle H, an outlet connection O, and an inlet connection G, connected to a source of fluid pressure and communicating with the eye of the impeller A through a passage controlled by a poppet valve C having a hollow stem surrounding the shaft K and connected to a piston D in a cylinder D,; pressure supplied to the cylinder D 1 opposes the pressure loading on the valve C and controls the opening of the valve. In a modification guide vanes are interposed between the impeller and turbine to reverse the rotation of the latter and the turbine drives the output-shaft through gearing. Two turbines, a forward and reverse may be coupled to a common output shaft and controlled by the inlet valves to the respective impellers. The Specification describes three modified valves, a balanced piston type valve, a spear controlled nozzle and a jet splitting arrangement whereby a proportion of the fluid supply is deflected from the impeller eye and flows to the outlet O.
