Abstract
A reagent which also acts as a filtering medium comprises a carbonate or oxide of calcium or of magnesium or of both together with a molecularly dehydrated phosphoric acid salt the solubility of which in water approximates to that of the ingredients first mentioned. The phosphoric acid from which the salt is derived preferably contains less water per molecule than orthophosphoric acid. The reagent may be made by mixing calcium carbonate magnesium oxide and the phosphoric acid and granulating, or granulated calcium carbonate and magnesium oxide may be impregnated with a solution of the phosphoric acid salt. As calcium carbonate and magnesium oxide burned or calcined dolomite may be used.
