Abstract
692,027. Twisting varns and cords. HOWE TWISTER CORPORATION. Sept. 6, 1949, No. 23103/49. Class 120(ii) A cord is formed by twisting a yarn around its source of supply and forwarding it to a takeup position, preferably in association with other yarns, where it is taken up within the orbit of a second balloon, whilst being given more than one twist per revolution about the axis of twisting. The supply and takeup devices are preferably twofor-one twisters and where two supply devices are employed, such as 20, 22, Fig. 2, these may be driven from an electric motor 38 by means of a belt 42, which also drives the take-up and cabling device 24. Yarns from devices 20, 22 pass upwards to a stepped capstan 33, positively driven from the spindle 152 of the cabling device 24. A pulley 248, influenced by a compression spring 252, tensions the yarns combined at the capstan 33 and before leaving the supply devices 20, 22, each yarn is tensioned separately by a tension device 100, Fig. 5, located above each hollow supply spindle 74. This latter tension is imposed by two slidable blocks pressed together by leaf springs 136, the pressure of which is adjustable by vertical movement of a sleeve 144. From the tension device 100, the yarn passes through the spindle 74 and a passage 84 formed in a disc 82 to the capstan 33. The disc 82 rotates with the spindle 74, but the tension device 100 and the bobbin supporting structure 86, along with a can 104 and a cover 106, are maintained substantially stationary by a weight 97, the device being held at an angle to the vertical when in operative position. The cabling device 24 has a rotary disc 174, Fig. 12, supporting a can 176 and a leg 180, which rotate with the spindle 152. An inner rotor 172 made of soft annealed steel is fixed to the spindle 152 and is surrounded by a permanent magnet 208 dependent from a base member 160 of a bobbin supporting structure 162 mounted on bearings on' the spindle 152, so as to rotate in association with the spindle against the winding tension of the yarn. A traverse mechanism 192 adapted to lay the yarn on the bobbin 37 is mounted on a frame attached to a disc 186 held substantially stationary by a weight 189, when the device is in its operative tilted position. The traverse mechanism is driven from the spindle 152 by a belt 198 and a worm 194 actuating a rack and pinion arrangement. Yarn passes from a pulley 322 of the traverse device to a presser finger 318 (not shown in full) held against the bobbin 37 by a leaf spring engaged with a ratchet wheel 310.
